I think every writer has that feeling of amazement when holding a copy of a new book and saying, "This book is mine! I wrote this!"

I feel proud and blessed to make my dreams as a writer come true. 

I have five books of poetry, and a short fiction collection, The Plague Confessor. 

Four of my poetry books, Dear Deepest Ghost, This Scarlet Dancing, Night's Island, and Pretty Green Thorns, and my short fiction collection, The Plague Confessor, have all been published by Emu Books. 

They are available at my website and online bookstore.

 As a journalist, I've attended many rock concerts as a reporter and arts editor -- and that's a fun and enviable gig to have, though it brings its challenges, like any form of work.  Even as a civilian, it's hard to go to such an event purely for enjoyment -- probably because there is always something new to learn, and a new story to witness.  Last night, I went with my husband and brother in-law to see Genesis at the TD Garden in Boston.  It's a wonderful venue which, its corporate name-changes notwithstanding, enshrines a great part of the city's history, as seen in the banners declaring victories of the Bruins, including the great Bobby Orr.  This concert brought its own kind of history -- a band long-known for its complex but accessible music, and lyrics telling eccentric and sometimes dark tales.  Not unlike another progressive trio, Rush, Genesis works because of three strong personalities who can work together to create something great.  Also b...

A Christmas of flickering lights, and lives lived

The Annual Homeless Person's Memorial Vigil takes place the evening of the Winter Solstice, the longest and darkest night of the year.  For someone living rough, every night is dark, and long.  I learned of the vigil this past week, while still somewhat new at my job as editor at Worcester Magazine. As sometimes happens for journalists arriving at a new coverage beat, I was "today years old" when, scrolling through Facebook posts, I saw alerts for the vigil. So, I made the trek from my home in Lowell to Worcester to cover it.   Community journalism can't be remoted in. I'm unfamiliar with writing about homelessness, both in cities and the suburbs. On Thanksgiving, taking grief and gratitude to the river side

  It's the seventh Thanksgiving without my husband, Lawrence Carradini.  Like a lot of people who have lost someone beloved, I reconstruct his presence in memory.  Today, I went for a walk along the Vandenberg Esplanade by the Merrimack River, part of Lowell Heritage State Park.  This is a walk we made many times together. What delighted him most were the ducks bobbing on the waters, with their staccato patter, and occasional splashing of wings.  A silvery late November sky ensured shadows and reflections -- the constitution of memory.  I like to imagine a Heaven populated by ducks, and Larry standing on the river banks, talking to them in a language only he and they know.  This, to me, is the right of anyone who is bereft -- and even if merely symbolic, even if merely a comfort to those left behind, it is complete.
